Outdoor living is part of everyday life in South-East Queensland, and a well-designed outdoor space can change the way a home is used. A shaded deck becomes another living room and a natural place to gather, a pool becomes a retreat for warm days, and landscaping brings privacy and shade over time.
RYCON approaches these areas as part of the whole home, ensuring pools, decks and gardens work in step with the architecture, site and lifestyle of each client.
Outdoor Living in Brisbane: Climate and Design Considerations
Designing for Brisbane means responding to the climate. Long summers, high humidity and periods of heavy rain all shape how outdoor spaces are used and can perform over the long term.
Rather than addressing these conditions later, the most effective outcomes come from early decisions. Orientation, airflow and material selection work together to create spaces that remain comfortable across the seasons. Capturing breezes, managing sun exposure and allowing for natural cooling through planting are all part of that thinking.
These foundations often sit quietly in the background, but they make a noticeable difference in how a space is experienced day to day.
Designing for Shade: Structures, Planting and Orientation
Shade is one of the most important factors in determining how outdoor spaces are used. Without it, even generous areas can sit empty through the warmer months.
On a recent project in Wynnum, the outdoor deck responds to changing conditions across the year. The fully covered deck provides reliable protection through summer, while still allowing breezes to move through the space. Glass balustrades maintain uninterrupted views of Moreton Bay, keeping the connection to the landscape.
As the seasons shift, the orientation allows winter sun to reach further in, bringing warmth when it’s needed. A built-in fireplace adds another layer of use, extending the deck’s use beyond the warmer months.
This approach shows how structure and orientation can work together to support year-round outdoor living in South-East Queensland.
Integrating Pools as Part of the Architectural Design
In many residential projects, outdoor works are delivered after the main build is complete. RYCON takes a more connected approach, considering pools and landscaping alongside levels, drainage, services and internal layout from the outset. For larger homes and renovations, this brings greater coordination to the build and helps outdoor areas feel settled within the home as a whole.
This level of planning is especially important when a pool forms part of the architectural design. At Borva Street in Dutton Park, the pool sits on an elevated level, extending out toward the surrounding treetops. The infinity edge draws the eye outward while still holding a strong architectural presence, and wide steps connect the main living spaces to the pool and terraces.
Each area has its own purpose yet still belongs to the same overall composition. Material choices further strengthen this connection, with finishes continuing across terraces, stairs and pool surrounds. The transition between spaces feels more continuous and considered.
Landscape as a Driver of Comfort and Privacy
Landscaping plays an important role in how outdoor areas perform, particularly in Brisbane’s climate. Beyond aesthetics, planting contributes to cooling, shade and privacy. While landscaping can take time to fully settle, its impact is long-lasting and brings softness and character to the property.
The Brunswick St project shows how even a compact garden space can shape the experience of a home. Positioned beside the entry path, the planting softens the built form and creates separation from the neighbouring property. Designed to become more private and welcoming as it matures, the garden will also provide natural shade over time. Even in its early stages, it adds texture and depth to the entry, giving the space a more settled residential feel.
RYCON considers landscaping early in the project for these reasons, allowing it to shape how outdoor spaces are experienced rather than simply filling the remaining areas around a completed build. Each detail is shaped by the home and its setting, but the intention remains the same: to create outdoor spaces that are comfortable to use, not just visually appealing.
Bringing It All Together
Outdoor spaces rarely come down to a single decision. They are the result of many elements working together, across structure, orientation, planting and material selection.
For Rycon, this approach is always a part of the overall design process. Each decision is made in context, with a clear understanding of how the home will be used and how it will respond to its environment.
The objective is a home where outdoor areas feel natural to move through and comfortable to spend time in. Spaces that are not only considered at completion, but continue to perform well into the future.
