Flooring choices have evolved considerably in luxury residential design. Today, homeowners can choose natural timber, polished concrete, stone and contemporary large format tiles. Each material brings its own character, influencing how a home looks, feels and functions.

RYCON works with architects, designers and homeowners to select flooring that complements each home’s architecture and lifestyle. Every decision considers the design vision, how each space will be used and the conditions of Queensland living.

Flooring Trends Shaping Queensland Homes

We are seeing more contemporary luxury homes embrace natural textures, warmer colours and matte finishes. Wide timber boards, parquetry flooring and large format tiles create beautiful and cohesive interiors.

In Queensland homes, using matching or complementary flooring inside and out creates a seamless transition between living areas and outdoor entertaining spaces, particularly when large glass doors open onto patios and terraces.

RYCON’s Brunswick Street townhouses in New Farm reflect this approach. The transformation of seven existing units into four luxury townhouses incorporated tiles and parquetry flooring. Parquetry brings warmth and pattern, while tiles create a refined finish. Together, these materials add visual interest and maintain a consistent style throughout the interiors.

Moving Beyond Carpet: A Shift in Luxury Living

While carpet remains a popular choice for bedrooms, many homeowners now prefer hard flooring throughout their main living areas.

Timber, stone and polished concrete offer practical benefits, particularly for cleaning and maintenance. Unlike carpet fibres, hard surfaces are generally easier to clean and do not retain dust, debris and stains in the same way. Their durability also suits busy households, while rugs can introduce warmth, colour and pattern. This offers greater flexibility to refresh the style of a living room over time.

RYCON’s Borva Street renovation in Dutton Park illustrates this approach. The renovation introduced new living areas, a kitchen and terraced patio leading to a spa and edge swimming pool. Tiled flooring connects the indoor and outdoor spaces, while carpet in the bedrooms provides a more comfortable finish.

Natural Materials, Different Architectural Expressions

Each flooring material creates a different atmosphere. The right choice depends on the home’s architectural character and how its owners want each space to feel.

Timber flooring brings warmth through its natural grain, from pale oak tones to richer browns. Lighter finishes suit relaxed interiors, while darker timber can contrast with neutral joinery. Parquetry, including herringbone, adds pattern and a sense of craftsmanship.

Polished concrete offers a clean, contemporary appearance. Its smooth, continuous finish suits open plan interiors and creates a neutral foundation for other architectural features.

Natural stone brings distinctive texture and variation, with limestone, travertine and marble offering different colours and finishes.

RYCON’s Cecil Road renovation in Bardon demonstrates how different flooring choices can work within the same home. RYCON retained the warm timber floorboards to preserve the original Queenslander’s character, while introducing large-format dark grey tiles in the bedroom areas for a more contemporary feel. Together, these finishes balance traditional charm with modern design.

Designed for Brisbane’s Climate and Lifestyle

Brisbane’s warm summers, humidity and outdoor lifestyle make flooring selection particularly important.

Timber requires appropriate moisture management. Stone and tiled floors can support year-round comfort, offering cooler surfaces in summer. When positioned to receive natural light, they can also absorb warmth from Brisbane’s winter sunshine. Outdoor flooring also requires careful consideration of slip resistance, drainage and weather exposure.

RYCON’s Petersen Street renovation in Wynnum highlights the importance of designing for Queensland’s climate. The covered outdoor deck provides shade during summer while allowing breezes to move through the space. In areas like these, flooring finishes need to withstand changing weather conditions while complementing the home’s overall design.
